As a hoofcare provider, I come across horses that have some great feet. On the other hand, I also see horses that have some pretty terrible feet as well. We know there are a lot of factors that affect hoof health: diet, environment, movement, etc.. but I have suspected for quite some time that the health of the horse’s gut can play a role in how comfortable and sound their feet are.
This is an area I haven’t explored enough, so I reached out to someone who has spent a LOT of time diving into gut health: Dr. Ethan Romas-Hill. He chatted with me about factors that affect gut health, symptoms of gut issues, steps to improve gut health, and we even discuss the potential effects gut health has on hoof health.
