Laminitis Recovery

We all know laminitis cases can be difficult. We have made so many advances in laminitis research in the last few years, but horses don’t always read the textbook. What we do know, however, is that 90% of laminitic cases are due to metabolic issues – namely IR or PPID – and getting those under control often will significantly improve comfort and soundness for those horses.

A few months ago, I started interviewing friends and colleagues for “case study” style podcast episodes, where we talk about specific horses and hoof rehab cases, and what it took to get them sound. For this episode, Carla Anderson, a hoofcare provider based out of Wisconsin, spoke with me about a difficult laminitic case – her own mare, Cupcake. She dove into what she did and how she got her more comfortable.

Enjoyed the podcast. RE lab ranges… they’re taken from both metabolic and non-metabolic horses, right? If the baseline was established using Only metabolic horses, I feel like it would be a better guideline. I want everyone to have insulin below 20.

    1. Yes, latest research with Dr. David Rendle shows non-fasted insulin should be in the single digits or teens to prevent laminitis.
